DEFINE GRAPHIC DESIGN Below are a handful of clever graphic design posters I've gathered that attempt answer the question – what is graphic design? I think some do better than others here. however, I sometimes tend to get hung up on thinking too broadly. Especially when I attempt to think about how I would "define graphic design". OK. I'll give it a try. – Graphic Design is an activity that is so simple and also very complex all at the same time. It's the ability to tap into your own subconscious thoughts as well as other's and somehow extract a factual or fictional thought pattern, attach it to logic, then spell it out in a visual language that's understood by all. Got that? OKAY. Have a look these. They do a better job than me.

LONDON UNDERGROUND

Harry Beck, was an engineering draftsman/designer, the mastermind behind the London Underground Tube map in 1931. Beck drew up the diagram in his spare time while working as an engineering draftsman at the London Underground Signals Office. London Underground was initially sceptical of Beck's radical proposal — it was an uncommissioned spare-time project, and it was tentatively introduced to the public in a small pamphlet in 1933. It immediately became popular, and the Underground has used topological maps to illustrate the network ever since.

Enjoy this BBC documentary, the story and the struggles Beck endured through the years before he finally arrived at the design that is still used today, pretty amazing.
